I have rebooted, went into broken state (as above), so I have done as you said:

# /etc/init.d/mdadm-raid stop
# /etc/init.d/mdadm-raid start
# vgchange -ay
# mount -a

(the "mdadm-raid start" does a "mdadm --assemble --scan").

But on the next reboot, I go in broken state again.

Do I need to "update-initramfs"?
