It needs not be standard because it's used *inside* mdadm. Just
because the OSF standardised their concept of UUIDs does not mean
that suddenly, everyone who was using unique identifiers must
rewrite their software, especially not if it works. In 8 years of
mdadm maintenance, I have never heard of anyone making cosmetic
edits to mdadm.conf like you are describing.
I'll forward a well-tested patch upstream, but I will not engage in
this conversation for longer.
