I disagree with this:

• the change to GNU tar will let your own user ID end up
  in the tarball and reduce compression and introduces a
  chance that nōn-standard GNU tarisms end up in it

• using tar’s compression options (either tar) is never
  a good idea; this will further reduce compression

Furthermore, pax is actually the standard tool, not GNU tar :þ
