mediawiki1.8 won't definitly go into etch, but you can try my first package at 
this place:

Please note that I haven't tested it fully, it works like a charm for 
upgrading previous wikis, but I experienced terrible issues with mysql and 
the mess between client lib for server and php5...

Any feedback will be welcomed..
