I don't think it  is not a good idea. texvc has no use without mediawiki and 
is intented only for using along with mediawiki.

I think there are two ways for you:
* either compile texvc for your own from your own mediawiki (not that 
difficult, it is only a 'make' in the math/derectory as far as i remember)
* Either install the debian package for mediawiki

As a side question, I'd like to know why you didn't install debian's package 
directly ? 
If you beleive there is anything that makes it unusable for you, then you 
better send bug reports about that...
