CategoryTree extension needs the following symbolic link,

   $ ln -s /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions
/var/lib/mediawiki/extensions/CategoryTree

since this extension need to access javascript and css from the following
http path,

   http://localhost/mediawiki/extensions/CategoryTree/CategoryTree.{js,css,rtl.css}

However, this path can be set in variable $wgCategoryTreeExtPath which
is '/extensions/CategoryTree' by default.
