I've had that in the past and realized it was in fact a configuration issue 
with php5 and /var/lib/php5, indeed.

The problem, however, must come from an issue with session registration, even 
though you checked the rights so I would tend to put the blame on the 
configuration on the server before looking at mediawiki...
