SVN would be the best. You can also easily get a diff and send it.

I am ok to add commit rights to interested maintainers.

The current extensions package should be easy to extend. Basically, you can 
give the svn url of one file of the extension, pull all the rest and 
synchronise later.

I will, however, split the current list of urls into several files in order to 
be able to update a single extension.

I will post more details on the check_versions.pl script later..
