I think I already mentioned the idea, but let me repeat it. If a branch
(family) on the upstream repository would help you, I'm all for giving
you that.

I would like to see all downstreams in the same repository where from
the latest release there is a distributor branch (with common patches
like mimetypes.patch) from which all distributions would branch (the
folders with the different metadata for deb, rpm...).

The main difference with the current approach would be having the
patches as full revisions (instead of as patches in separate files), but
that would allow a better usage of the VCS and seems already to be your
intention [cherry-pick/merge between branches (from master to debian,
between distributors and also from distro patches to upstream)].
