Where was the removal of skins/common/images/cc-* reported?

I see the commit at
http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/pkg-mediawiki/mediawiki/trunk/debian/rules?r1=379&r2=450
but not a bug # or discussion.

They do look like copied from http://creativecommons.org/
which is at least contradictory with the statement at
README that only lists cc-by-nc-sa.png and cc-by-sa.png

I would prefer to replace them from upstream, but I'm
not sure how will that be received.
I discover I noted on r66559 its license as a problem
but there was little attention. It merits a wider discussion (although
it looks problematic).

An option would be to make new icons similar to how they are used on
commons see eg. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Cc-by-sa-3.0

That's a combination of
* https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CC_some_rights_reserved.svg
* https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cc-by_new_white.svg
* https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cc-sa.svg

The symbols are probably ineligible to ©, but they may still be
trademarked. :S

(and at least on File:Cc-sa.svg there seems to have been a
misunderstanding when uploaded, as
http://web.archive.org/web/20060417123526/http://creativecommons.org/policies
do mention them)

A nice option are those of
  http://freedomdefined.org/Logos_and_buttons#Buttons

and of course there are the debian replacement buttons.
