Oh sorry. Well, with a default blender scene, a cube should already be
there. If not, you can add it with 'space', then Add > Cube. Remember
that you can always start another scene from scratch by hitting ^X or
File > New.

Press 'tab' to switch from Object mode to Edit mode. Both vertices and
edges should turn to yellow.

Then 'a' to unselect all vertices, color switches from yellow to pink
and black for vertices and edges respectively.

Then 'b' to start a block selection. Vertical and horizontal dotted
lines appear, you're now in block selection mode.

Then drag and drop (with the left button) around the bottom edge. During
this operation, a dotted rectangle should appear, you just have to draw
a rectangle with the bottom edge included in it. The selected bottom
edge and vertices should now appear back in yellow (they're selected).

To start an extrusion, then press 'e' and confirm 'Region' (the
default), either by clicking on it or by hitting 'enter'. SEGV.

Does the -w option suit your needs? blender --help lists every option
(there's also a manpage if you're using debian).
