Mesa 9.2 compile: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lz

Hello,

I'm trying to get Mesa 9.2 backported/compiled for Wheezy for my own
personal reasons. I had no problems backporting/compiling Mesa 9.1.6.
I grabbed Mesa 9.2 packaging from the Experimental package.

Everything compiles fine for 64-bit Wheezy after backporting all the
build-deps, but then it gets down to the linker part and I get this error:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lz

A quick google search suggests that I might need to add a build-depends
on a zlib1g-dev package?

Tips/Suggestions/Help is greatly appreciated. I really need newer
graphics drivers for Steam and I don't want to run testing/unstable just
yet.

-David
