I understand, just pointing out that using alternatives in this case
will break programs. Maybe as the tools progress, this won't be an issue
later on.

Yes, though ironpython is a better and faster alternative (the build is
tricky, but I'd like to see that packaged for debian, too).
Also note that mono+ikvm can be used to run javascript, too:
