Does Mono run on Maemo 5?

I found https://garage.maemo.org/projects/mono, which excludes Maemo 5.
I found posts (I think it was http://www.maemo.org/) that said Mono is too
heavy for Maemo 5. Is that correct?
Assuming Mono currently does not run on Maemo 5, how can it be made to
(quite willing to roll up my sleeves*)?

I'm dead-keen on porting .NET apps onto my N900, hence the motivation.

* I have virtually no Unix/Linux experience, but am a quick study. That
said, the little research I've done (two days' worth) shows one incredibly
fragmented and obtuse world, with little patience for noobs, and no guide on
where to start. It's a shame, but will get around that by keeping Amazon in
business.
