Debian Lenny, which you're using, ships with 1.9.1. It's a pretty old
distro now. Debian Squeeze should release pretty soon (within a couple
of months, maybe) with Mono 2.6.7. Mono 2.6.7 is the latest version
considered a "long-term support" release by Novell - 2.8 is not
considered that supportable, and for a distro with as long a release
cycle as Debian, picking the LTS version makes sense.

2.8 packaging is an ongoing effort in addition.
