I also just found the mono-project debian 3.8 repo ... seams like someone's been busy at xamarin working on my wish list, I'm sure that wasn't there a few days ago. 
Now I just plug in a repo to apt and install the tested stable build ...and on a clean stock Debian, it installed flawlessly.
