I opened the search dialog, entered a pattern to search for, marked the
messages and deleted them using the delete function within this dialog.

I didn't close the dialog after this search, but entered a new search
pattern deleting the old one, and searched for this new pattern.

No.  Before I restarted mozilla I got the old subject and sender in the
mail list section, but the "new" messages headers and body in the
mailview section.  After restart it was both the new message.  This new
message was marked unread even though I had read this message before
restart and both old messages were marked read.
