FYI, you could use your favourite package management system to remove the
java-gcj-compat-plugin package.

Okay, I think I know what's going on: some fonts on your system might be
dangling links. To confirm this idea, could you try to run
"strace -f -eopen -o /tmp/somefile iceape" and try to reproduce again ?
Then, please send the /tmp/somefile here. (Note you might need to install the
strace package)
