these two fix the problem

S1) If I log in and set the lang in GDM not to italian, it works

S2) If I
# mv /usr/share/iceape/chrome/calendar-it-IT.jar /usr/share/iceape/chrome/calendar-it-IT.jar.crasha
then it works regardless of locale

So it seems that you pinpointed the problem

thanks

but here comes the Questions-That-Should-Not-Be-Asked

?!) in my other PC (an amd64) I have the same language settings
 LANG=it_IT.UTF-8 .... why on earth does it work there ?!?!

!?) on the host where it does not work, if I unset LANG and GDM_LANG
 in a terminal , and I
 $ iceape -calendar
 it fails . To start it, I really have to logout, change the language setting
 in GDM and relogin. Why ?!?

(at the same time, it is a pity that we have to trow away the baby
and the locale )
