backport patches for RC 1.8.1.5 release

To clarify: we will include all fixes in "official"
distributor-release ... however as such a release has to be shipped from
official cvs tag it might just not be out in synch with 1.8.1.5
release.

I sent these patches here in order to get additional feedback and to
provide you with a way to release in time. Any tests appreciated. If
you want to be CCed on embargoed security bugs to verify if testcases
are fixed, just say so.
