backport patches for RC 1.8.1.5 release

I quite don't get this version number. Next 1.8.1 release is 1.8.1.5 and
next 1.8.0 release supposedly 1.8.0.12. Typo ?

Anyways, I took a quick look at the patches, and I don't see what
visibility_gcc_fixes.patch is supposed to be for. We already have
similar fixes. Or are they workarounds that have been applied upstream
in 1.8.1.5 to avoid pulling the real fix from trunk ?
