Might this depend on the theme used?
I'm using kde4, having had the same problem too. After switching to a 
different GTK style (Qt4 to Qtcurve) this problem (at least till now) 
disappeared, as well as some others like text boxes, scroll bars, tabs, and 
other things not being painted.
