Bug#640283: iceweasel: plugin selection doesn't match the preferences

I have both mozilla-plugin-vlc and totem-mozilla packages installed.
The preferences -> Applications say for MP3 audio:

  Use VLC Multimedia Plug-in (in Iceweasel)

But on an MP3 file (served as audio/mpeg), the selected plugin is
the Totem one! Indeed the About context menu item says:

  About Totem Browser Plugin
  Totem Browser Plugin 2.30.2
  Browser Plugin using GStreamer 0.10.35
