Here are the relevant missing pieces:

Note that your firefox is a x86 binary, not amd64/x86-64. If you
download a x86-64 binary from mozilla.org (e.g. from
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/10.0.4esr/linux-x86_64/
), you should have the same problem as with iceweasel.

It might be possible. You have to figure out what gnome knows about
these extensions.
