hm, it actually works for me with iceweasel 20 and https://www.xkcd.com/
right now.  (hovering over the image i see a lengthy popup that starts
with the text "2031: Google defends [...]" (but i won't give away any
more for spoilers :P)

Could you try it with a new browser profile in safe mode and report back
whether you still have this problem?

 iceweasel -no-remote -new-instance -safe-mode -ProfileManager
