I just looked, and the signing bit seems to be on in the stable
source code.

I could simply be wrong and this isn't the problem, but
I am getting a cert error on java applets signed by
a cert signed by the G5 root cert.

FWIW, this is USAA bank, the deposit at home feature
that's raising the error.  Could the intermediate
cert not have it's code signing bit on?  I can't
seem to get to the intermediate cert itself from
within iceweasel.  (Using curl is going to be a
minor project.)

What more do you need from me?
