Top-Posting is one of the horrible things that come with the "practical"
HTML Webmailers or by people that only knowing MS Outlook. But
top-posting makes it hard to find the relevant info from reporters like
you. :)
Here a short copy about top-posting and why don't to use it.

Hmm, o.k. You don't use Icedove but Iceweasel, so you can't have the
issue that reported by this bug in Icedove.
Some short explanation how the l10n package works. The l10n packages of
Icedove provides own localization files. In detail it is just one file
for each language -> language-[LANGUAGE]@thunderbird.mozilla.org.xpi.

That files ships all localizations for Icedove and only for Icedove. It
contains all files in a zipped format that Icedove extract while
starting. So the localization of Icedove (and Iceweasel as well) is
completely independent from the hunspell package.
If there are problems with the spell checking functions of
Icedove(/Iceweasel) then we have to look first if something inside the
prefs.js is responsible for that problems because other user of Icedove
would have the same problem with the spell checking in there language
while the functions inside Icedove to use external spell packages are
the same. The best way is to start with a fresh empty profile to
eliminate errors provoked by a corrupted prefs.js.
O.k. as you say you have no (more) problems with this spell checking
functions on Icedove we have to ask Arthur and John if they have any
problems with this on Icedove.
If not I will reassign this bug to Iceweasel.
