this doesn't even sound correct to me, regardless of the issues with
pinning that you describe:

I'd love to see icedove 17esr in wheezy-backports, but to get there we
need to get it into unstable first, and then from there to testing.

please follow up on http://bugs.debian.org/706859 if you want to see
this transition start :)

fwiw, it seems like there is more work to do to get such a transition to
happen.

it doesn't build on three platforms (armel and mipsel and sparc) due to
a segfault during hyphenation unpacking. (i just filed this as
http://bugs.debian.org/708331)

And it fails to build on kfreebsd-* due to a problem with build headers
(this header file is in libc6-dev on the linux-based arches):

>> In file included from /build/buildd-icedove_17.0.5-1-kfreebsd-amd64-BMX_pr/icedove-17.0.5/mozilla/ipc/chromium/src/base/platform_thread_posix.cc:15:0:
>> ../../dist/system_wrappers/sys/prctl.h:3:28: fatal error: sys/prctl.h: No such file or directory

(this sounds similar to http://bugs.debian.org/621819 and i've filed it
explicitly as http://bugs.debian.org/708325),

for more details, see:
