If you manually selected google.com previously, your default search
provider would not change with an upgrade.

If you were depending on the software's default search provider (which
used to be google), then an upgrade could well change the software's
default search provider.

look at browser.search.selectedEngine in about:config -- if it is blank,
you will use the browser's default search engine.

In your case, i suspect it was blank, so an upgrade that changed the
default also changed your selected search engine.

I think this is the right behavior of any piece of software: keep the
user's configuration if they have one, and rely on the built-in defaults
if they haven't.
