Just got the upgrade through stable-security :-) Thanks to everyone 
involved.

Indeed. For reference, I had an issue establishing the account because I 
was configured with cookies disabled. GMail's error message was 
explicit, but I couldn't figure out at first:
1- which browser was used to display the login page (the clue was the 
mini icedove logo in the top left corner)
2- that there was a cookie enable/disable setting in Icedove.

Cookies can be disabled once the account is created and configured, but 
not before. All is well now.
