One thing I've noticed that you didn't mention: on my hi-dpi display the
widget fonts are tiny after the move to GTK+3 (e.g., address bar, tab
titles, anything not rendered HTML).

Setting GDK_SCALE=2 makes it better, but I'm not sure if this is a
viable long-term workaround or not.

The effect is the same whether or not I run with --safe-mode (in fact,
the problem can be seen in the "do you want to start in safe mode"
dialog).

I don't run GNOME, but I do have "dconf" installed. Tweaking
"/org/gnome/desktop/interface/scaling-factor" (and text-scaling-factor)
has no effect.
