I blanked the ".index" and ran that script, and it worked. Then, I did
an "aptitude purge snmp", confirmed that everything was clean, and
then reinstalled snmp. It worked also.

Something must have happened when I first installed it.

I don't remember exactly if I had any previous version of either
libsnmp-base or snmp, but /var/log/aptitude thinks I didn't.
