Hi Steve,
sorry for interfering with your actions on this bug, I haven't noticed
your mail before mine while working on the bug. I still think the whole
issue is fixable in net-snmp (as described with my patches). I can
reproduce the problem with snmpd, but not with hplip. However, hplip may
call the respective functions later on, and with snmpd, I can trigger
the problem by setting "$ umask 0000", and starting the daemon which
creates .index 0666.
If nobody uploads the fixes, I can upload the version from experimental
within the next few days which also fixes the crash bug and some other
things. (And upstream already has a 5.4 line for our new experimental).

Maybe at BSPs we should be even more verbose about what we are just
doing. :-) I hope you had a nice flight home...
