Comments:

1) Adding a MIB to that location is only an option.  We don't document
   the other options and maybe we should, you're right.

2) the index file is regenerated, you're right, after something gets
   added to the directory but only if you have write permission (IE,
   are root).

That's certainly possible.  We support a generic search path, so the
above would certainly be possible.
