Hi Guillem,
  Older versions of net-snmp didn't use any files from /var/lib/dpkg but
the latest version does to get the install date of the package, or
whatever stating /var/lib/dpkg/info/<package>.list gives you.

So while its preferable to not be looking around dpkg-specific
directories, its just checking if a file exists and stating it.
