I hope someone will take care of this soon, since I can only do serious
work on that in two weeks from now.

These are easy to fix.

I would also prefer to build octplot using ftgl-dev.  However, the
changes needed in src/Makefile.am are non-trivial.  Instead of forking
the project, it would be better to help the upstream author to implement
a configure option for using either the native FTGL library or the one
shipped with the sources.
