| The new era Octave package maintenance in Debian has just started, with the
| upload of version 2.1.64-2 to unstable. I must publicly acknowledge the
| hard work of Dirk Eddelbuettel over this last years. He has been close to a
| model DD as regards package maintenance and let us hope that we will keep
| his level of excellence from now on.
|
| Here is the changelog entry for the latest version:
|
| ===========================================================================
| octave2.1 (2.1.64-2) unstable; urgency=low
|
| * Uploaded in behalf of the new maintainer of the octave2.1 packages: the
| Debian Octave Group <pkg-octave-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org>
| * debian/control:
| - Changed Maintainer
| - Build-depends on libreadline5-dev
| - octave2.1-headers depends on libreadline5-dev
| - Lower-cased the first word and removed some "The" words in the short
| description of packages, as per the Developers Reference, section
| 6.2.2. This makes Lintian happy.
It is only cosmetic, but very annoying. I discovered that on another upload
last week, and installed a lintian file to suppress it.
However, the lintian maintainers have relented and reverted. The test will
disappear as it threw /way/ too many false positives for Description text
stating with 'GNU ....' or 'KDE ....' etc pp.
| * debian/rules:
| - (clean) Inverse the order of the calls to rm libcruft/*/Makefile and
| make distclean. This was causing several *.o in libcruft to be left
| after debian/rules clean, which resulted in dpkg-source breakage when
| building the diff.gz package file.
| - (configure) Save the original octave-bug.in file as octave-bug.in.orig
| prior to the tempfile substitution
| - (clean) Restore octave-bug.in.orig as octave-bug.in, such that the
| patch does not end up in the diff.gz file

Cool. Never noticed the other issues.
| As you can see, I had to fix a couple of things, but Lintian is not totally
| happy yet:
|
| ===========================================================================
| W: octave2.1 source: changelog-should-mention-nmu
| W: octave2.1 source: source-nmu-has-incorrect-version-number 2.1.64-2
I think this may go away if you add yourself as Uploaders: in debian/control.
| W: octave2.1-info: description-synopsis-starts-with-a-capital-letter
| W: octave2.1-htmldoc: description-synopsis-starts-with-a-capital-letter
| W: octave2.1-emacsen: description-synopsis-starts-with-a-capital-letter
| W: octave2.1-doc: description-synopsis-starts-with-a-capital-letter
| W: octave2.1: description-synopsis-starts-with-a-capital-letter
See above. Can all be ignored.
| ===========================================================================
|
| I tend to disagree with Lintian in all these warnings, but I will discuss
| the issues with the Lintian folks.
Let us know what you find.
Thanks for getting this going.
Dirk
