As you probably already noticed, version 0.4.0-10 has been uploaded to
unstable. I fixed the versioned dependency problem by adding a
debian/shlibs.local file with the versioned information about the vtk
libraries. I already filled a bug report against the libvtk4 pacakge about
this.

I noticed that the octaviz package only work from inside my unstable
chroot. When I try to install the packages in my sarge system and run the
examples, I get just a blank window and the X server freezes completely.
It is so severe that there is no way to recover, besides rebooting the
machine. Perhaps I should only use in sarge packages built on sarge.
