Most of you have probably seen JWE's announcement in octave-maintainers,
but I am forwarding it below just for the record.
I have no time to package octave2.9 soon and I will be unavailable
(probably not even reading e-mail) for ten days starting next Monday
until after Eastern. If someone feel fit for building the package,
please go ahead.

As the jump in version numbers indicates, this snapshot is a big
change from the previous 2.1.x series. It includes a new
implementation of the sparse matrix data type and splits the gnuplot
parser out into a separate module. Most of the development for this
snapshot occurred on a CVS branch separate from the recent 2.1.x
snapshots. The diffs are relative to 2.1.63 because that was the
branch point in the CVS archive.
To be able to solve equations using sparse matrices, you will need to
install UMFPACK v4.4. A Debian package is available.
This version will be labelled the "development" version of Octave on
the download page of the Octave web site.
The snapshot is tagged in the usual way (ss-2-9-0) in the CVS archive.
As always, if your favorite bug is still not fixed, please report it.
Thanks,
jwe
