It depends on your definition of "smooth transition".  For the
libsundials-*-serial packages themselves, the transition si not
problematic, it is just a matter of adding "Conflicts" and "Replaces"
fields to debian/control.

On the other hand, the packages depending on libsundials-serial will
have to be rebuilt with the right dependencies once the libsundials
package is split.

Sounds good.  For now, I think we should release a unique
libsundials-serial package, to avoid bloating the archive.
