I was asking myself the same question.  I will try to figure it out soon.

Well, the dangling symlink probelm only occurred in the unstable chroots
of the buildds.  For the stable branch, it should be okay.

You mean this:

    FATAL: can't create vtkMultiBlockDataSet.o: No such file or directory

It looks like a problem in the ia64 buildd system.  I vaguely remember a
similar problem in the past, but I think it was related with time-out or
something like that.
