Thanks to John for starting this discussion and for Dirk to explaining
how it is done with the CRAN packages. I am sure that, once the Octave
pkg system will be fully working, we will find a good way of generating
the respective Debian packages automatically. I am also confident that
we will be able set an apt-getable repository for them at Alioth. This
brings me to my main question, which regards a non-technical issue:
Which will be the status of the automatically generated a packages? Will
they stay on a apt-getable repository or will they be integrated in
Debian? The later option is clearly more desirable, because the packages
will propagate to the mirrors and will be included in CDs and DVDs with
the distribution.
However, it seems to me that automatically generated packages do not have
the same status as packages done by hand. I hope I am being too cautious
here and that we will find in the future an easy way of signing and
uploading the automatically generated packages.
Dirk, which are your plans as regards the autoamtically generated
CRAN packages?
