Thanks for the patch.  Before trying it, I tried to replicate the bug
with the gcc-snapshot package.  Much to my surprise, the bug is gone now.
I am quite confident I am doing the right thing by setting the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH and the PATH environments variables.  I am using version
20060823-1 of gcc_snapshot.  This may explain the different results,
since Bug#362423 was filed over four months ago and it was maybe a bug
in g++ which got fixed in the meanwhile.

Martin, could you please try to build the octave2.1 package again using
the current gcc-snapshot?
