There are some variables (savefiles, save-files) in the debian/rules. Is my 
understanding correct that they are only there to prevent building the 
documentation on every architecture?

I would prefer to get rid of these. Our rules file is cluttered, building the 
documentation doesn't take much time compared to the whole build process and 
it's some sort of QA for texinfo on every platform.
