Yes but that's true on my system too.  The info alternative is in place:

$ls -l /usr/share/info/octave.info.gz
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 2008-07-08
13:03 /usr/share/info/octave.info.gz -> /etc/alternatives/octave.info.gz

$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/octave.info.gz
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 2008-07-08
13:03 /etc/alternatives/octave.info.gz
-> /usr/share/info/octave3.0.info.gz

Nevertheless "info octave" does not display octave3.0.info.gz. (but both
"info octave.info.gz" and  "info octave.info" do work).  Does info cache
its info pages somehow, that it might be looking up an earlier copy in
the cache?  Or could it mean octave2.1-info.prerm is still not doing the
right thing? (referring to the previous analysis at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=456636 )
