Quoting from #467503:
"With g++-4.2 (4.2.3-1) or g++-4.3 (4.3-20080202-1) it generates
code that crashes at runtime in the Prefix::newFile() method"

The symptoms for omniORB were quite similar to ours. Actually, I think
I tried gcc-4.3 once in qemu and it didn't work (doesn't mean much,
gcc-4.3 in Debian gets updated quite often).

And I *want*[1] to have octave3.0 in lenny.

[1] Imagine a little gnome stomping on its feet here.
