Well...

if this ABI change renders packages incompatible between them (i.e. 
octave-image in unstable and octave3.0 in experimental), my vision of the 
packages system is that they should conflict between them.

I don't know how, that's why I report bugs and don't maintain packages 
(yet) ;)
