"Common" to what?  Naming a package *-common makes sense when there are more
than one other packages that depend it.  For instance, the mysql-client-5.0
and mysql-client-5.1 depend on mysql-common.  This later contains the files
that are *_common_* to both versioned packages.

In sum, I dislike your idea.
