I participated to that thread. It seems to me that a consensus was
reached.  I then applied a patch to the Debian package [1] which passed
the Octave book jumbo-figures tests and I released the package as
octave3.0 1:3.0.4~rc5-1 to the experimental Debian distribution.  It was
uploaded to unstable as 1:3.0.4~rc5-2 a week ago, on March 11.

I think that having the release candidate in Debian unstable distribution
is a good opportunity to have it tested.  This distribution is used
mostly by people that accept some breakage in the packages.  The
migration into Debian testing would happen as soon as the last
autobuilders are done [2] and the 10 days quarantine period is passed.

In order to avoid that, I filed a bug report against the octave3.0 package
with severity level "serious" [3].
