I've now tried octave (3.6.3-2, the new unstable version) with
libhdf5-7. It is working fine. It continues crashing again after I
reinstall libhdf5-mpi-dev (i.e. libhdf5-openmpi-7, 1.8.8-9_.

I then tried octave-dbg (3.6.3-2), again with libhdf5-openmpi-7. It
still crashes. But as before, awkwardly it does not crash when run
inside gdb, so I still can't collect a backtrace.
